Sometimes a zipper stops working because the runner comes off or the teeth at the end are damaged. Here’s a simple way to repair it:
Examine the entire length of the zipper, paying close attention to the section where the problem occurred, typically near the bottom or in the corner. Look for missing, bent, or broken teeth. It's important to know how many teeth are damaged and where they are located to determine if trimming is necessary.
If the damaged or missing teeth are near the very end of the zipper, you can use a sharp pair of scissors or small pliers to neatly cut off the affected section. Make sure the cut is clean and straight across both sides of the track. This will allow the runner to move smoothly over the remaining teeth.
Carefully slide the zipper runner back onto the track. Align both sides of the zipper evenly, and gently work the runner up past the trimmed section. It may take a few tries to get it aligned correctly, but once it's in place, check to see if it zips up smoothly.
Once the runner is reattached, prevent it from sliding off again by stitching across the bottom of the zipper where the teeth were removed. Use a strong thread and sew several tight loops across both sides of the zipper fabric, right where the teeth used to be. This acts as a stopper to keep the runner from slipping off.
To make the repair more durable, sew an extra row of stitches just above the first one. This added reinforcement helps withstand repeated use and ensures the runner stays in place. Consider using a sewing machine for stronger, more even stitches if one is available.
Well done! Hopefully your zipper is back in action and working smoothly.
